Once all of the goods have been packaged, they will be transported to the different retailers or warehouses to be sold to the public. Goods can be distributed and handled in many ways including; on lorries, boats, planes and fork lift trucks

Packaging has to be able to deal with the following issues during transportation:

  • the impact of vibrations and compression during transit
for example you don't want to buy squashed and bruised bananas!
  • product preservation
during transit it is important that the products are in suitable packaging to avoid the product becoming ruined
  • stack-ability
how the products are stacked and transported can influence the quality of the product received, and also how many you can fit in the transport
  • cost
it is both economically and environmentally beneficial for packaging to be as lightweight and small as possible. The smaller the packaging, the more goods you can transport in one load, which means less fuel & transport costs and lower carbon emissions
  • safe handling
the size and weight of the packaging must be considered depending on the people or equipment handling them
